A windswept desert, heat rippling from the barren dunes, nothing but rocks and the hardiest of flora as far as the eye can see. Some see the desert a bleak landscape devoid of beauty, but that's simply not the case. The desert has a beauty thats wholly unique. There's something enrapturing in the quite desolation one can only find in the desert. But the desert isn't quite as barren as it appears. The creatures that call the oceans of sand and stone their home are some of the most ingenious survivalists on the planet.
The Living Desert Zoo and Botanical Gardens showcase this simple fact wonderfully. Featuring animals both local and exotic it's a delightful place to visit. What struck me during my visit is most of the park feels quite natural. Dirt trails lined with various cacti and other desert plant life abound. You feel as though you're on a nature walk and not in some man made construction. Many of the exhibits feature animals that have been rescued and are unable to be returned to their natural habitat due to injuries or upbringing. The staff is also incredibly knowledgable and more than willing to give you tour(Even if you didn't really want one. haha) My sole complaint would have to be the picture quality of their postcards. But that seems to be the case wherever I go.
Should you find yourself in the Palm Springs in need of a way to spend the day I highly recommend paying The Living Desert a visit. Don't forget to bring your camera and a telephoto lens!
